News Update

Condolences

• We mourn the passing away of Ms Yvonne Chua, Former CGST Board Director, as well as Dr Nip Kam Fan, Former Chairman of the CGST Board, who went to be with the Lord on March 10 in Hong Kong and March 13 in Canada respectively.

Graduate School

• All classes were held both online and in-campus during the second semester of the 2020-21 school year due to the Pandemic.
• The forty-fourth Graduation Exercises is scheduled on June 26 at CGST campus with live-streamed broadcast.
• We pray for the applicants who are being considered for the upcoming new school year. May God direct the selection process and give wisdom to the Admission Committee members.

Library

• In order to support the teaching and learning of our graduate programs, about 300 titles of hard copies and 300 titles of eBooks were purchased between April and June.

Theological Education by Extension (TEE)

• The TEE Graduation Exercises was held on March 20. A total of 207 certificates were conferred to 181 graduates for eight certificate programs. The graduates came from more than 120 churches in Hong Kong.
• There were 1,278 enrolments in the Apr-Jun term of our TEE courses. All classes were conducted online either as video-on-demand courses or via video conferencing in which students participate in real-time.

Word of Life Bible Study Ministry (WOL)

• The new 6-week online course in Putonghua on Psalms was broadcasted globally between April 12 and May 18.
• The 8-week Bible study classes in Brisbane, Canberra, Sydney of Australia were resumed beginning March 9; Class in Adelaide of Australia and Auckland of New Zealand were resumed beginning April 13.
• The new 8-week Bible study course in Cantonese on The Epistle of James was offered online between April 27 and June 26.

Continuing Education

• The 4-session course on “Rethinking Spiritual Formation in Pastoral Ministry” was held from May 10 to 31. Ms Grace Wong, Chaplain, was the instructor.
• “Building More Effective Collaboration Relationships” was the theme of the 2-session workshop, which was conducted on June 21 and 28 respectively. Hosts included Rev Timothy Au, Associate Professor (Practical Studies) and Chaplain, as well as Dr Harry Hui, Social / Organizational Psychologist and Honorary Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Hong Kong.
• The 4-session course on “Pastor’s Reflection on Leading Online Worship Service” will be offered between July 5 and 26. Dr Cazaria Choi, our alumnus, is the instructor.

Faculty Engagements

• Rev Timothy Au was invited by Lutheran Theological Seminary to speak at the Rev Daniel Wong Lectures on Pastoralia on March 15. “Unprecedented Pastoral Ministry – The Post-Pandemic Family” was the topic of his lecture.
• Rev Dr Michael Chu, Vice President and Assistant Professor (Practical Studies), was invited by Evangel Seminary to preach at their Devotion Day on April 1. “Children of Light, Walking in the dark?” was the theme of the message.
• Rev Dr Stephen Lee, President and Lam Ko Kit Tak Professor (Biblical Studies), preached at the South English Easter Conference 2021 via internet broadcast between April 1 and 5. “Sojourn • Pilgrimage” was the theme of the Conference.
• Dr Pan Yi-Jung, Assistant Professor (Practical Studies), was invited by Nanjing Union Theological Seminary to conduct lectures for their second class of Doctor of Ministry program from April 12 to 17. “Life journey: life formation in pastoral ministry” was the subject of the lectures.
• Rev Dr Luke Cheung, Wilson Chow Professor (Biblical Studies), was invited by Nanjing Union Theological Seminary to conduct lectures for their New Testament doctoral program between May 11 and 31. Dr Cheung gave lectures on “General Epistles”.
• Rev Dr Michael Chu was invited by Melbourne School of Theology to speak about “Chinese pastoral team in Western society” via internet platform on May 18.
• Dr Pan Yi-Jung and Rev Dr Michael Chu presented papers at the 2021 International Conference on Spiritual Leadership & Social Transformation hosted by the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on May 22. The titles of the papers were “The Paradox of Female Spirituality: the Contemporary Inspiration from Teresa of Avila’s and Mother Teresa’s Vulnerability” and “Listening and Dialogue: Essential Disciplines of Spiritual Leadership towards Restoring a Vibrant Community” respectively.

Publications

• Rev Dr Bernard Wong, Associate Dean and Associate Professor (Theological Studies), and Rev Dr Song Jun, Philip Teng Associate Professor (Theological Studies), co-authored and published an article “The Bible and Ethics in Chinese Society” on The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in China in March 2021.
• Dr Pan Yi-Jung, Assistant Professor (Practical Studies), published an article entitled “Apocalyptic Spirituality and Advent in a Time of Corona Pandemic” on Spiritus: A Journal of Christian Spirituality, Vol. 21, No. 1 (Spring 2021): 69-79.

Finance Update

• We give thanks to our God for His providence of the School’s financial needs for the first quarter of 2021 amidst various uncertainties. We continue to look upon the Lord for His gracious providence in the forthcoming months.
