Graduate School

  • A virtual theological education experience session with the theme “Making Choices in the Midst of Change” was held on February 27. Besides chaplains and students sharing their learning experience, a trial lesson of integrated course on “preaching in the midst of change” was co-taught by Dr Simon Cheung, Associate Dean and Henry Co See Cho Associate Professor (Biblical Studies), Rev Dr Bernard Wong, Associate Dean and Associate Professor (Theological Studies), and Rev Dr Michael Chu, Vice President and Assistant Professor (Practical Studies). The trial lesson facilitated those Christians who are interested in receiving theological training to better understand the School’s curriculum.
  • CGST will launch the Doctor of Ministry (DMin) program in September 2021. An online information session was held on March 1 to introduce this new program.

 

Library

  • As courses are held both online and in classroom this semester during the pandemic, in order to meet such needs, about 300 titles of eBooks and 300 hard copies were purchased between January and March to support the teaching and learning.

 

Theological Education by Extension (TEE)

  • There were 1,743 enrolments in the Jan-Mar term of our TEE courses. All classes were held online either as video-on-demand courses or via video conferencing in which students participate in real-time.

 

Word of Life Bible Study Ministry (WOL)

  • A new 8-week online course in Cantonese on “The Apostles’ Creed” was broadcasted worldwide between January 19 and March 20.
  • The online Bible study in Putonghua on The book of Acts was re-run globally between February 1 and March 8.

 

Continuing Education

  • A virtual information session for the course on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and workshop on the Application of Integration of Faith in Counselling was held on January 25. Dr Tracy Lo, Assistant Professor (Counselling Studies), was the instructor.
  • A seminar about “Who are you, pastor? A Wounded Healer You Are!—pastoral care and self-care in the midst of doubt” was held online on February 8. Hosted by our alumnus Ho Tan (MFC 14), President Emeritus Carver Yu and distinguished guest Dr Charles Yu were the speakers.
  • An online 4-session continuing education course on “Let Christ be the Head of Our Home” to explore pastoral care for families within faith community and to offer feasible approaches was held between March 1 and 22. Rev Timothy Au, Associate Professor (Practical Studies) and Chaplain, was the speaker.

 

“Reconnect” Psycho-educational Video Series

  • In response to the need of pastoral care at churches, CGST alumni of Counselling Studies produced a series of short videos in Cantonese featuring “‘Reconnect’ psycho-educational video series” on CGST Facebook Page and YouTube Channel between January 18 and February 15.

 

Online Public Events

  • The two North America online Revival Seminars were held from January 9 to 10. Dr Kelvin Yu and Dr Lilian Li, Assistant Professors (Biblical Studies), were the speakers of the seminar for East Coast and West Coast respectively.
  • The Josephine So Culture and Ethics Lecture Week was held between January 12 and 15. “The Crisis of American (White) Evangelicalism — a historical, theological, cultural, and personal perspective” was the theme of this year’s Lecture Week. Rev Dr Mark Labberton, President of Fuller Theological Seminary, was the keynote speaker, whereas CGST Faculty members were response speakers. The lecture series was conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation into Cantonese and Putonghua. Archive of the 4-day Lecture Week series can be viewed on CGST website and YouTube CGST Channel.

 

Ordination

  • Associate Dean and Associate Professor (Theological Studies) Dr Bernard Wong was ordained by The Hong Kong Christian & Missionary Alliance Church Union and C&MA Yau Tong Church on January 10.

 

Faculty Engagements

  • Rev Dr Luke Cheung, Wilson Chow Professor (Biblical Studies), and Dr Pan Yi-Jung, Assistant Professor (Practical Studies), were invited by Nanjing Union Theological Seminary to conduct lectures. Dr Cheung gave lectures on New Testament Studies for their doctoral program in New Testament between December 28, 2020 and January 15, 2021 in Nanjing; Dr Pan gave an address at the opening convocation for the new classes of doctoral degree programs in Old Testament and New Testament studies and the Doctor of Ministry program on December 7, 2020. Dr Pan also taught an online course on research methodology and academic writing from December 2020 to January 2021.
  • Dr Raymond Au, Carson and Virginia Mok Professor (Counselling Studies), was invited by China Evangelical Seminary, Taipei, to conduct a virtual pastoral counselling seminar between January 18 and 19. “Challenges and strategies for conducting counselling for men” was the topic of the seminar.

 

Publications

  • President Emeritus Wilson Chow’s new book in Chinese Micah: Who is a God like Yahweh? was published in December 2020.
  • Rev Dr Luke Cheung, published an article in Chinese “Apocalyptic literature and Eschatology: A Review of Dr. George Chok’s book in Chinese Last Things, Volume 1” on China Evangelical Seminary Journal No. 11 (December 2020).

 

Finance Update

  • In the past year, while adapting to unprecedented circumstances, we give thanks to our God for His faithfulness in providing the School’s financial needs through churches, brothers and sisters’ loving support. Our 2021 donation need is US$ 4,500,000, and we look upon the Lord for His grace and providence for this year.
